The Writers' Guild of Alberta strives to make the literary arts accessible all across the province, including in communities outside major urban centres that may have less opportunities for literary events.
Current and past rural outreach initiatives include:
- Read Alberta Books: A travelling display of the nominated and winning books from the Alberta book awards season tours small libraries within the Alberta regional libraries systems. Author visits to select libraries are also included in this initiavitve.
- Online programming: To make programs and services accessible all across the province, we are focusing this year on expanding our online offerings. So far we have launched popular podcasts and webinars, and we hope to develop online critiquing groups and a virtual writer in residence next.
- Rural Writers in Residence: Periodically, we have worked with the Library Association of Alberta to place writer in residence in rural libraries that may have never had a writer in residence. The writers in residence offered manuscript consultations and public workshops.
- Alberta Culture Days: In past years we have taken the opportunity during Alberta Culture Days to partner with rural libraries to bring authors to rural communities. We have organized readings, author Q&A events, and writing workshops.
We have lost several sources of funding for rural programming due to the economic downturn, and the support of donors matters more than ever for us to continue to reach out to communities outside Edmonton and Calgary.
The Writers’ Guild of Alberta (WGA) was formed in 1980 to provide a meeting ground and collective voice for all the writers of the province. Our members write in every genre and at every level of expertise, and enjoy a wide range of benefits and the opportunity to network with fellow writers.
The WGA helps give Alberta writers a sense of unity and community, and with over 1000 members, it is the largest provincial writers’ organization in Canada.
We offer opportunities for professional development and networking, including writing retreats, workshops, webinars, youth programs, and conferences. Our website includes podcasts, FAQs on writing and publishing topics, and a blog about the writing life.
We also host the annual Alberta Literary Awards. Created in 1982, these awards recognize excellence in writing by Alberta authors.
The WGA replies on the generosity of individuals and sponsors to accomplish our mission. Donating to the WGA directly supports the development of Alberta writers.
Donations can be directed to ongoing program and administrative costs or to the longevity and future sustainability of the organization though the WGA endowment plan.
